Hulu finally joins Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime with new feature

Competition around streaming services is hotter than ever, with seemingly hundreds of options now available to choose from. So it’s odd Hulu, home to hit series The Handmaid’s Tale, Little Fires Everywhere, and PEN15, has only just added a feature that’s been included with rival options for years.

Two years after reintroducing 4K streaming, Hulu quietly added HDR support to some of its original content this week. In a message on its support page, the Disney-owned streaming service said: “Users can currently stream select Hulu originals in high-dynamic range (HDR), HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision on select devices.”

“HDR content delivers a higher contrast range for much finer picture details,” it added.

Content which can be streamed in HDR will get a badge to show the option is available. A commentator on AVS Forum has put together a list of what’s currently available – and it is disappointingly short.

TV series include Nine Perfect Strangers, The Handmaid’s Tale, High Fidelity and Hellstrom. Original movies include documentary WeWork, RUN and The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

Even if any of those take your fancy, you won’t be able to enjoy them in HDR on every device. Hulu said it will only support HDR content on Fire TV devices (including Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Cube), Apple TV 4K (Gen 5 or later), and HDR-compatible Vizio, Roku and Chromecast Ultra models.

The new HDR offering adds to the platform’s existing library of 4K Ultra HD content, which again is mostly limited to Hulu originals. You’ll be able to watch 4K content on all the above devices, as well as UHD LG TVs and the S and X models of the Xbox One.

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. It makes images on a TV more contrasted, meaning you can see more detail and colour than standard or even high definition – making your favourite shows and movies look even more real and immersive.

Other streaming services which support HDR include Disney Plus, Netflix Premium, Amazon Prime, Apple TV+ and HBO Max.
