Google Pixel 5a launching today? First look ahead of price, release date, specs reveal

The Google Pixel 5a could officially be unveiled today, according to whispers. Earlier this month, Google lifted the lid on its Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro flagship handsets, which are set to launch later this year. And hot on the heels of that announcement, the Pixel 5a – the latest budget twist on the Pixel smartphone range – could soon be unveiled.

As reported by MSPowerUser, the first advert for the Google Pixel 5a appears to have gone live early. The promotional shot of the Pixel 5a promo was revealed by Japanese firm SoftBank, with the advert showing off the camera capabilities of the phone.

It also gives the first proper look at the Pixel 5a, which has a similar design to its forebearer. In terms of specs, the Pixel 5a is expected to have a 6.4inch 60Hz display and be powered by the 5G enabled Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chip.

This is the same 5G chip that was fitted with last year’s Pixel 5, which was dubbed a phone for the “economic downturn”. Launched in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, this device opted for an appealing price point instead of a huge leap in design and specs.

Elsewhere, the Pixel 5a is rumoured to come with 6GB of RAM and be fitted with a huge 4680 mAh battery. This is the biggest battery size ever for a Pixel device, improving on the Pixel 4a 5G’s 3,800mAh power pack.

The Pixel 5a looks like it will also be IP67 dust and water-resistant and come with the trusty 3.5mm headphone jack. In terms of the price tag, the Pixel 5a is expected to be cheaper than its predecessor.

The Pixel 5a is rumoured to cost $449 – which is $50 cheaper than the Pixel 4a 5G at launch.

In the UK, the Pixel 4a 5G launched at £499 – so if Android fans in Blighty see a similar price reduction the 5a could retail for £449.

If you like the sound of all of this, the good news is you shouldn’t have to wait too long for the Pixel 5a’s release date.

The Pixel 5a is rumoured to launch of Tuesday, August 17, with a release date allegedly pencilled in for Thursday August 26.

Besides the new Pixel handsets, Google could also have another new product up its sleeve that will launch in 2021.

Rumours have claimed a new Chromecast could debut this year, which may be the successor to the Chromecast Ultra.

However, it remains to be seen what the big selling point of a potential new Ultra streaming device could be.

The main thing that distinguished the Chromecast Ultra from the regular Google streaming dongle was 4K HDR support.

However, the latest Chromecast with Google TV – which was released last year – already supports 4K content.
